However, as the word\u00a0\u201cvagaries\u201d suggests, this can be a daunting and unpredictable journey, often\u00a0fraught with frustration and disappointment. As suggested by the cartoon,\u00a0university leaders expect new recruits to be multi-talented teachers,\u00a0publishers and grant writers. The bad news about grant\u00a0writing is that most\u00a0proposals never get written (although we all have good intentions), while most\u00a0of those that do get written don\u2019t get funded. What a thought!<\/p>\n<p>However, there is some good news: funding will\u00a0always be available for those with novel ideas and it is possible for someone\u00a0to improve their grant writing skills. In fact, one of the biggest myths is\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cthere\u2019s no money out there\u201d. Among the most competitive funding agencies\u00a0in the world is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>\u00a0(NIH), based in Bethesda,\u00a0Maryland, USA. It is also one of the most generous\u00a0funders, providing grants of\u00a0up to $500,000 per annum for successful applicants.<\/p>\n<p>The NIH encompasses more than twenty separate\u00a0institutes and centres, from those based on anatomy \u2014 such as the National\u00a0Heart, Lung and Blood Institute \u2014 to those based on pathology, such as\u00a0the\u00a0National Cancer Institute. The annual budget of the NIH exceeds $30 billion per\u00a0annum which represents 1% of the country\u2019s annual budget. Although there are\u00a0world-class facilities on the NIH\u2019s\u00a0Bethesda campus \u2014 including Nobel Laureates\u00a0among its research staff \u2014 the organisation devotes more than 80% of its budget\u00a0to extramural awards. This is good news for all researchers, including\u00a0those\u00a0from foreign countries, who are able to compete for NIH grants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Write_Proposals1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1921\" title=\"Write_Proposals\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Write_Proposals1-300x284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Write_Proposals1-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Write_Proposals1-1024x971.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Write_Proposals1.jpg 1352w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Seven years ago, when CapeRay was still located\u00a0within the University of Cape Town (UCT), we were successful in securing a\u00a0two-year grant for $275,000 from the NIH\u2019s National Cancer Institute\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/projectreporter.nih.gov\/project_info_description.cfm?aid=6969193&amp;icde=14794520&amp;ddparam=&amp;ddvalue=&amp;ddsub=&amp;cr=2&amp;csb=default&amp;cs=ASC\" target=\"_blank\">R21CA101705<\/a>).\u00a0This grant enabled us to develop a working prototype that subsequently led to\u00a0venture capital funding and the company was then spun out from UCT.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier\u00a0today CapeRay sent off a grant application to our country\u2019s Department of Trade\u00a0and Industry, administered under their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spii.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Support Programme for Industrial\u00a0Innovation<\/a>, or SPII. This is a matching\u00a0scheme, where SPII will provide one\u00a0dollar in grant funding for each dollar spent by the company. The grant will\u00a0boost CapeRay\u2019s coffers by $400,000 and enable us to complete the commercialisation\u00a0of\u00a0Aceso, our dual-modality system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broaden the search.
