When describing this case,\u00a0under the section\u00a0entitled \u201cTreatment,\u201d he suggested, simply: \u201cThere is none.\u201d It would be\u00a0another two thousand years before the disease was given a name by Hippocrates:\u00a0<em>karkinos<\/em>, the Greek word for \u201ccrab,\u201d\u00a0since the swollen blood vessels radiating from a\u00a0breast tumour resembled the\u00a0limbs of a crab.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Mukherjjee_Book_Cover_cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290 alignleft\" title=\"Mukherjjee_Book_Cover_cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Mukherjjee_Book_Cover_cropped-178x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Mukherjjee_Book_Cover_cropped-178x300.jpg 178w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Mukherjjee_Book_Cover_cropped.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWriting\u00a0in 440 BC, the historian Herodotus tells the story of Atossa, the queen of\u00a0Persia, who was struck by a malevolent form of cancer, a bleeding lump in her\u00a0breast. In desperation she persuades a slave to take a knife and\u00a0excise the\u00a0tumour. Shortly after this operation, Atossa mysteriously disappears and does\u00a0not feature in the story again.<\/p>\n<p>The history of cancer, featuring not only\u00a0ancient characters such as Imhotep and Hippocrates, but modern pioneers like\u00a0Sydney Farber and Harold Varmus, has been recounted by Siddhartha Mukherjee in\u00a0his prize-winning book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sidmukherjee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Emperor of\u00a0All Maladies<\/a>. As described on the dust cover, the author \u201cexamines cancer\u00a0with a cellular biologist\u2019s precision, a historian\u2019s perspective, and a\u00a0biographer\u2019s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and\u00a0eloquent\u00a0chronicle of a disease humans have lived with \u2013 and perished from \u2013 for more\u00a0than five thousand years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of this biography of\u00a0cancer, the author challenges his reader to a thought experiment: imagine\u00a0Atossa, the Persian queen, travelling through time, \u201cappearing and reappearing\u00a0in one age after the next.\u201d By\u00a0freezing her tumour in its stage of development\u00a0and behaviour, Mukherjee asks: \u201cHow has her treatment changed over\u00a0two-and-a-half millennia and what has been the impact on her length of\u00a0survival?\u201d From radical mastectomy to\u00a0radiation by X-rays, and from adjuvant\u00a0chemotherapy to hormonal therapy, he speculates that, by the late 20th\u00a0century, Atossa could reasonably expect to live for another 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u201cwar\u201d on breast cancer has yet to\u00a0be \u201cwon,\u201d the future is full of possibility.
