Analogic, which had\u00a0previously held a minority equity position,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/analogic-acquires-ultrasound-technology-firm-pocketsonics-2013-09-20\" target=\"_blank\">paid $11 million for the balance of the shares<\/a>\u00a0plus future payments of $3\u00a0million based on the achievement of certain milestones. This news follows hard\u00a0on\u00a0the heels of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthimaging.com\/topics\/diagnostic-imaging\/analogic-inks-83m-deal-acquire-ultrasonix\" target=\"_blank\">Analogic\u2019s acquisition earlier this year<\/a>\u00a0of Vancouver-based\u00a0Ultrasonix, a manufacturer of ultrasound imaging systems, for $83 million.<\/p>\n<p>Analogic has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.analogic.com\/about-us-global-family.htm\" target=\"_blank\">acquired several independent\u00a0imaging companies<\/a>\u00a0over the past twenty years, including the Danish ultrasound\u00a0manufacturer BK Medical in 1993, and ultrasound transducer manufacturer\u00a0Sound\u00a0Technology in 2002. In addition to its ultrasound products, Analogic also\u00a0manufactures the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrad.com\/solutions-breast-imaging.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Anrad line of X-ray detectors<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 based on state-of-the-art\u00a0amorphous selenium \u2014 that are used in\u00a0mammography systems, with a special\u00a0emphasis on digital breast tomosynthesis.<\/p>\n<p>Analogic was established in the 1960s by a brilliant\u00a0engineer,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_Marshall_Gordon\" target=\"_blank\">Bernie Gordon<\/a>, who had invented and commercialized the world\u2019s first\u00a0solid state analogue-to-digital converter, for which he would later\u00a0be\u00a0recognized with the National Medal of Technology by Ronald Reagan (see image below). In 1975,\u00a0with advice from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/medicine\/laureates\/1979\/cormack-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Allan Cormack<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 who would later win the Nobel Prize in\u00a0Medicine \u2014 Bernie and his fellow\u00a0engineers from Analogic were able to invent\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=patentimages.storage.googleapis.com\/pdfs\/US4135247.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">patent the instant imaging CAT scanner<\/a>, groundbreaking technology that they\u00a0licensed to Siemens. With his \u201cYankee spirit of innovation\u201d, Gordon\u00a0managed to\u00a0grow Analogic organically, the company operating as an original equipment\u00a0manufacturer (OEM) and supplying its systems to leading imaging companies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Bernard_Gordon_Medal_of_Technology.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3017 alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px; margin-top: -0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Bernard_Gordon_Medal_of_Technology-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Bernard_Gordon_Medal_of_Technology-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Bernard_Gordon_Medal_of_Technology.jpg 907w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Analogic became\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NASDAQ:ALOG\" target=\"_blank\">a\u00a0publicly traded company<\/a>\u00a0on the NASDAQ stock exchange in the late 1970s and in\u00a0less than a decade its market capitalization was significant, making Gordon a\u00a0very wealthy man.\u00a0He became a philanthropist, setting up a charitable\u00a0foundation, where the major beneficiaries have been academic institutions such\u00a0as Tufts University and his\u00a0<i>alma mater<\/i>, MIT.<\/p>\n<p>Bernie\u00a0served as CEO, President and Executive Chairman of Analogic, finally retiring\u00a0in 2004 at age 77 to help launch\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurologica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NeuroLogica<\/a>, with a CAT scanner to assist\u00a0stroke and trauma patients. Although\u00a0Analogic encountered headwinds in 2008,\u00a0its stock is now at an all-time high.
