We are delighted to report that another key article has just appeared online in<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/9xNDBlfO993SA\" target=\"_blank\">Diagnostics<\/a><\/em>, an open-access journal published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/l1pRBns2aa6IJ\" target=\"_blank\">MDPI<\/a>) that is based in Switzerland. The paper, which is freely available in PDF format simply by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/zK8dB2f3llGFp\" target=\"_blank\">clicking here<\/a>, describes our second-generation Aceso system that now includes a custom-designed ultrasound transducer. The full citation is:<\/p>\n<p>Padia K, Douglas TS, Cairncross LL, Baasch RV, Vaughan CL. \u201cDetecting Breast Cancer with a Dual-Modality Device\u201d, <em>Diagnostics<\/em>, 7(1): 17, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The paper emanated from a collaboration with: lead author Dr Kamila Padia, head of radiology at 2 Military Hospital in Cape Town; Professor Tania Douglas, holder of a research chair in biomedical engineering and innovation at the University of Cape Town; and Dr Lydia Cairncross, consultant surgeon and director of the breast clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital. The CapeRay co-authors included engineering manager, Roland Baasch, and CEO, Kit Vaughan. The article belongs to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/rWgRBLcw11gS7\" target=\"_blank\">Special Issue on Breast Imaging<\/a>\u00a0that is being edited by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/ZO8RBQCOQQgS6\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Tanya Moseley<\/a>, professor of diagnostic radiology with the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6082 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract.jpg\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract-768x764.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Diagnostics_Graphic_Abstract-1024x1018.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a>The primary aim was to demonstrate that our second-generation Aceso system could produce improved quality images that provided clinically meaningful results. Utilising two industry standard phantoms, we showed: the FFDM results were better than the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/meJRBXHMQQoFO\" target=\"_blank\">European Reference standard<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cacceptable\u201d and were approaching \u201cachievable\u201d; and the ABUS results yielded lateral and axial spatial resolutions of 0.5 mm and depth penetration of 80 mm. As illustrated at left (\u00a9 <em>Diagnostics<\/em>), we have successfully co-registered the FFDM image in the horizontal plane with the ABUS images in the sagittal (raw data), horizontal (reconstructed) and coronal (reconstructed) planes for a patient with a histologically confirmed invasive ductal carcinoma.<\/p>\n<p>Our article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/zK8dB2f3llGFp\" target=\"_blank\">concludes<\/a>: \u201cEven though FFDM is still regarded as the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer, it is also recognised that, if a woman has dense breast tissue, lesions may be mammographically occult. The false negative findings can be devastating for the women concerned because a later diagnosis may lead to a poor prognosis and more expensive treatment.
