It was here on Wednesday 21 December that The Wiles Gallery\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grocotts.co.za\/content\/wiles-family-exhibition-bathurst-11-12-2011\" target=\"_blank\">hosted an\u00a0exhibition of paintings<\/a>\u00a0by artist-in-residence, Jane Wiles, and her illustrious\u00a0family\u00a0members. The guest speaker was Carmel Rickard, a journalist and author,\u00a0who was visiting from Smithfield in the Free State.<\/p>\n<div class=\"img alignright size-medium wp-image-669\" style=\"width:240px;\">\r\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wiles_Rickard_cropped-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"Carmel Rickard (L) and Jane Wiles (R), \u00a9 Talk of the Town, Port Alfred\" width=\"240\" height=\"238\" \/>\r\n\t<div>Carmel Rickard (L) and Jane Wiles (R), \u00a9 Talk of the Town, Port Alfred<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>When\u00a0introducing Carmel, Jane mentioned how they had first met in Pietermaritzburg\u00a0in the mid-1970s. Jane had just founded an advice office for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Sash\" target=\"_blank\">the Black Sash<\/a>, a\u00a0non-violent resistance movement of white women\u00a0who were opposed to apartheid.\u00a0Carmel was a first year student at the University of Natal and volunteered her\u00a0time to an organisation that not only served as an advocate for families\u00a0affected by apartheid laws but\u00a0also held regular street demonstrations where\u00a0\u201ctheir striking black sashes were worn as a mark of mourning and to protest\u00a0against a succession of unjust laws.\u201d Their friendship has grown over the\u00a0intervening years,\u00a0strengthened more recently by a shared experience: they are both\u00a0breast cancer survivors.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech Carmel drew attention to the\u00a0importance of light to an artist, and in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrits.co.za\/jwiles\/about.php\" target=\"_blank\">Jane\u2019s own words<\/a>: \u201cI am moved by how\u00a0the light integrates and disintegrates Nature,\u00a0especially at change of light,\u00a0dawn and dusk. The sea, rivers, wind and sky have a way of wiping the slate\u00a0clean in a way bigger than man can handle. The reflecting\u00a0backwash of a wave is\u00a0a perfect example of this, as the wind ripples on the sand.\u201d<div class=\"img alignleft size-medium wp-image-670\" style=\"width:240px;\">\r\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Dog_Dawn_cropped-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"'Dog Dawn'\u00a0by Jane\u00a0Wiles\" width=\"240\" height=\"150\" \/>\r\n\t<div>'Dog Dawn'\u00a0by Jane\u00a0Wiles<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>Carmel extended\u00a0the metaphor of an artist shedding light on her subject to the writer\u2019s quest\u00a0for the truth \u2013 her high school\u2019s motto was\u00a0<em>veritas<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and how it had influenced\u00a0her own career, especially on matters of the law.\u00a0This quest is a never-ending one where the spectre of the Protection of State\u00a0Information Bill, the so-called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=143000997\" target=\"_blank\">Secrecy Bill<\/a>\u201d,\u00a0now casts a pall across\u00a0contemporary South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>As we contemplate the future, and what the\u00a0year 2012 portends, it is heartening to know that we have among us two artists,\u00a0both breast cancer survivors, who will continue to shine a light on the truth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bathurst, a village in\u00a0the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, is the setting for this final blog\u00a0of 2011.
