In 2017 the total value of 2363 signed contracts was R1.39 billion \u2013 over $100 million at the time \u2013 while there were 41 invention disclosures, 72 patent applications filed and 16 patents granted. RCI has just published its annual report, <em>Innovation at UCT 2018<\/em>\u00a0that has the theme, <em>Cancer in the Crosshairs<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rci.uct.ac.za\/sites\/default\/files\/image_tool\/images\/100\/booklets\/InnovationatUCT2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a>\u00a0to download the report), which profiles 12 innovations in the cancer detection and treatment arena.<\/p>\n<p>A major challenge with anti-cancer drugs like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cisplatin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cisplatin<\/a>\u00a0is toxicity and the brutal side-effects. Sharon Prince has identified the metal platinum as a potential root cause of the problem and has discovered a drug based on palladium that has shown great promise in animal trials. Kevin Naidoo, whose research\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/index.php\/2016\/big-data-comes-to-the-cape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we featured<\/a>\u00a0two years ago, has identified glycogene biomarkers that can be used to classify cancer types, thereby assisting oncologists to select the most approriate therapy for their patients. CapeRay\u2019s contributions are featured under the heading, \u201cSaving lives, time and money with dual-modality imaging,\u201d and mention is made of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/index.php\/2017\/aceso-on-the-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our collaboration<\/a>\u00a0with Kamila Padia, head of radiology at Two Military Hospital in Cape Town (see our Aceso system below left).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Aceso_cropped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Aceso_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Aceso_cropped.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Aceso_cropped-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a>Bill Horsnell has explored the use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surfactant_protein_A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surfactant proteins<\/a>, normally associated with lung function, to fight infections such as the human papillomavirus (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_papillomavirus_infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPV<\/a>) which can cause cervical cancer. Stefan Barth and his team have been interested in the possibility that antibodies can be harnessed for two purposes: to recognise diseased cancer cells and then to enable tailor-made treatment of the cells. Virna Leaner has tested the hypothesis that if you are able to block the function of a protein that is essential to a specific cancer, then the cancer cells should die, and she has identified a promising chemical compound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebe.uct.ac.za\/ebenews-georgevicatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Vicatos<\/a>\u00a0has created implants to replace long bones and other bony structures that have been ravaged by osteosarcomas, while Anwar Jardine has explored the application of deep tissue bioluminescence imaging to monitor tumours non-invasively during treatment.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcb.uct.ac.za\/mcb\/BRU-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Rybicki<\/a>\u00a0has created HPV vaccines that are expressed in the tobacco plant with rapid turnaround, higher yield and can be produced less expensively than traditional methods. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7146 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells.jpg 1175w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells-768x767.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UCT_Innovation_cells-1024x1022.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1175px) 100vw, 1175px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(17)31509-X\/fulltext?rss=yes&amp;code=lancet-site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent paper<\/a>\u00a0in <em>The Lancet<\/em> has suggested that South Africa could experience a 78% increase in cancer cases by the year 2030.
