In Warsaw, IN\u00a0companies like DePuy and Zimmer were producing innovative orthopaedic implants\u00a0such as artificial hip joints, while in\u00a0Minneapolis and St Paul, MN there were\u00a0companies like Medtronic and 3M that were manufacturing cardiac pacemakers and\u00a0orthopaedic brace materials. Could such a model be duplicated elsewhere in the\u00a0world, I wondered?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is an unequivocal \u201cyes\u201d with the Western Cape\u00a0region of South Africa providing the ideal location for a thriving community of\u00a0medical device companies. Key to this development has been the creative energy\u00a0that thrives within institutions of higher\u00a0learning in the province.\u00a0At\u00a0Stellenbosch University, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stbweb02.stb.sun.ac.za\/berg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biomedical Engineering Research Group<\/a>\u00a0has designed\u00a0an artificial intervertebral disk and a percutaneous heart valve.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0the University of Cape Town, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miru.uct.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Medical Imaging Research\u00a0Unit<\/a>\u00a0has developed a smart microscope for the automatic diagnosis of\u00a0tuberculosis from sputum slides, while also pioneering the application of\u00a0slot-scanning x-rays for the detection of breast cancer.\u00a0This latter project\u00a0led to the spin out of CapeRay. Originally set up as an\u00a0initiative of\u00a0South Africa\u2019s Department of Science and Technology,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.md2m.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Medical Devices to Market<\/a>\u00a0or md2m, has\u00a0assisted with the commercialization of devices such as audiometers and a wound\u00a0therapy system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/ChromoFlex-Stent.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"ChromoFlex Stent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/ChromoFlex-Stent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>For the past twelve years\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.disavascular.com\/disavascular\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">DISA Vascular<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0manufacturing innovative medical devices for the treatment of coronary artery\u00a0disease. Their SolarFlex stents (see photo) have been implanted in patients all\u00a0over the world.\u00a0For the past twelve years\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sinapi.co.za\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sinapi Biomedical<\/a>\u00a0has developed\u00a0and is now manufacturing a\u00a0chest drain that incorporates a flutter valve to drain fluids from the thoracic\u00a0cavity. Established fifteen years ago,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.titamed.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">TiTaMED<\/a>\u00a0has been designing and\u00a0manufacturing implant systems to treat patients with spinal disorders, including\u00a0scoliosis.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, on the southern tip of the African continent is a\u00a0thriving medical device industry that is making a vital contribution to the\u00a0care of patients both locally and internationally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty years ago, the nearby states of Indiana (IN) and\u00a0Minnesota (MN) were home to a host of medical device companies.
