Three years ago, the editor of <em>DIEurope<\/em> invited CapeRay\u2019s CEO Kit Vaughan\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/index.php\/2017\/breast-imaging-in-dieurope\/\">to contribute a review<\/a>\u00a0of papers describing the company\u2019s dual-modality Aceso system. Today we highlight three of the nine articles on breast imaging (<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/fido7777\/docs\/dieurope_october_2020_hr?fr=sOTg4ODc2NTU3\">click here<\/a>\u00a0to download the issue).<\/p>\n<p>It is well established that dense breast tissue \u2013 as measured by mammography \u2013 is a significant risk factor for breast cancer. The American College of Radiology developed a lexicon known as BI-RADS in which the radiologist visually grades each breast: A = almost entirely fatty; B = scattered fibro-glandular tissue; C = heterogeneously dense; and D = extremely dense. The University of Pennsylvania has developed a software package called\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.upenn.edu\/sbia\/libra.html\">LIBRA<\/a>\u00a0that is freely available and calculates breast density from both digital mammograms and tomosynthesis images. One application of LIBRA was a case-control study of the association of density with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8812 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2.jpg 1362w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg12_Fig2-768x504.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1362px) 100vw, 1362px\" \/><\/a>In women with dense breast tissue, mammography will often fail to reveal a cancerous tumour \u2013 yielding a false negative diagnosis with devastating consequences \u2013 and hand-held ultrasound (HHUS) is often recommended as an adjunctive screening modality. One of the leaders in HHUS is the Italian company\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esaote.com\/\">Esaote<\/a>\u00a0that has developed tools to assist clinicians in making diagnostic decisions. These include strain and shear-wave elastography; 3D localization; and dual-modality display of the ultrasound and mammographic images (seen above left). However, unlike CapeRay\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/index.php\/power-of-dual-modality\">Aceso system<\/a>, the breast is in a different orientation and degree of compression, thus complicating image interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its widespread use in breast cancer screening, HHUS does have some drawbacks. These include the length of time to acquire the images \u2013 at least 20 minutes \u2013 and dependence on the operator\u2019s skills. This has led to the development of automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) systems that address these shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2-842x1024.jpg 842w, https:\/\/www.caperay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DIE_Oct2020_pg35_Fig2-768x934.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a>The current ABUS systems manufactured by\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gehealthcare.com\/products\/ultrasound\/abus-breast-imaging\/invenia-abus\">GE<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens-healthineers.com\/ultrasound\/breast-care\/acuson-s2000-abvs-ultrasound-machine\">Siemens<\/a>\u00a0gather multiple slices in the transverse plane with the woman lying in a supine position. From these slices it is possible to reconstruct the breast tissue in 3D and then display it in orthogonal planes such as the coronal view (seen right, where the cross-hairs identify an invasive cancer and the yellow dot indicates the nipple).
